The VFW has programs that focus on our Americanism. two of our biggest programs are Patriot's Pen and the Voice of Democracy. These are both essay competitions aimed at our 6-12th graders. The winners complete for scholarship money that is awarded at multiple levels throughout the competition. All entries must be submitted to a post in your area for judging.
Patriot's Pen is a written essay directed towards our middle school aged children grades 6-8.
Voice of Democracy is a spoken word essay for high school students grades 9-12.
This year's topic for 2026-2027 will be "What a Veteran taught me about America".
The VFW also sponsors the Teacher of the Year award that showcases teachers in our local area. It affords them an opportunity to complete against other teachers from around the U.S. for a chance to win scholarship money as well. More information can be found at the link below
